Details:

The “classical” Makefiles generated by automake are very verbose. With
AM_SILENT_RULES([yes]) build output will have following behavior:

make  all-am
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/flame/test-hellow'
  CC     hellow.o
  CCLD   hellow
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/flame/test-hellow'

Using "make V=1" one can always enable verbose build.

Follow-up Comment #1, patch #9222 (project avrdude):

Hello Jörg,

what do you think about this patch? You'll find silent output by almost all
OSS projects like Linux, bootloaders etc.

Follow-up Comment #2, patch #9222 (project avrdude):

Personally, I'm used to see the verbose messages, but I'm not
oppsed to hiding them a bit, as long as there is some clear
documentation on how to enable the full messages when anyone
wants to see them.

It's one of the patches likely to go in as soon as I can afford
to spend some time into the project again (which gets us back
to the previously posted question about when it might be
possible to actually prepare a release ...)
