E avrftdi_open(706): Error -8 occured: inappropriate permissions on device!

Rod Naugler
Hi all,
I'm running Linux Mint 18 Mate. I have previously used AVR dude with
Eclipse and this hardware in Linux Mint 17 Mate and I've recently had to
do a full reinstall. Now I'm trying to get things back up and running.
The programmer board is manufactured by my university and gives the
following output when plugged in:
[   28.375845] usb 3-1: new full-speed USB device number 5 using xhci_hcd
[   28.509190] usb 3-1: New USB device found, idVendor=0403, idProduct=6010
[   28.509193] usb 3-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2,
SerialNumber=0
[   28.509195] usb 3-1: Product: AVR-USB Development Board
[   28.509197] usb 3-1: Manufacturer: TUNS
[   28.526411] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial
[   28.526422] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
[   28.526431] usbserial: USB Serial support registered for generic
[   28.529150] usbcore: registered new interface driver ftdi_sio
[   28.529163] usbserial: USB Serial support registered for FTDI USB
Serial Device
[   28.529207] ftdi_sio 3-1:1.0: FTDI USB Serial Device converter detected
[   28.529239] usb 3-1: Detected FT2232C
[   28.529388] usb 3-1: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now attached to
ttyUSB0
[   28.529405] ftdi_sio 3-1:1.1: FTDI USB Serial Device converter detected
[   28.529437] usb 3-1: Detected FT2232C
[   28.529949] usb 3-1: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now attached to
ttyUSB1

ttyUSB0 is the programmer path, as far as I know, and ttyUSB1 is the
serial data connection.
The microcontroller board contains an ATMega644A which is not directly
compatible with AVRDude, but I have added the appropriate definition to
avrdude.conf. I've also added the appropriate definitions to the eclipse
definitions so that it sees the proper port definitions and such for the
644A. The project compiles without error and AVRDude attempts to upload
it, but I get the subject error.
I've confirmed that I a member of the dialout group and I've added the
appropriate udev rule as well. The error persists.
Can any one help me troubleshoot this?

Thanks,
Rod

Does making yourself a member of the wheel group help?

You can also check the Ubuntu forums to see what other developers do when working with AVRDude. Each OS generally seems to be a little different, but since you have a Ubuntu-based system, looking at what others do for Ubuntu may help.

Just a comment. I'm surprised you are using Mint 18 which is new. I avoid doing operating system upgrades if I have ongoing hardware projects that are working fine on an older release. Let the new OS get a few updates before converting to it, or install it as a virtual machine, or install it on a non-critical box just to try it out.

Re: E avrftdi_open(706): Error -8 occured: inappropriate permissions on device!

Rod Naugler

That stackexchange link did the trick. It was the USB subsystem that was causing the error. Added the rule and its working now!

Thanks!

Hi all,
I'm running Linux Mint 18 Mate. I have previously used AVR dude with Eclipse and this hardware in Linux Mint 17 Mate and I've recently had to do a full reinstall. Now I'm trying to get things back up and running. The programmer board is manufactured by my university and gives the following output when plugged in:
[   28.375845] usb 3-1: new full-speed USB device number 5 using xhci_hcd
[   28.509190] usb 3-1: New USB device found, idVendor=0403, idProduct=6010
[   28.509193] usb 3-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[   28.509195] usb 3-1: Product: AVR-USB Development Board

[   28.526422] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
[   28.526431] usbserial: USB Serial support registered for generic
[   28.529150] usbcore: registered new interface driver ftdi_sio
[   28.529163] usbserial: USB Serial support registered for FTDI USB Serial Device
[   28.529207] ftdi_sio 3-1:1.0: FTDI USB Serial Device converter detected
[   28.529239] usb 3-1: Detected FT2232C
[   28.529388] usb 3-1: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now attached to ttyUSB0
[   28.529405] ftdi_sio 3-1:1.1: FTDI USB Serial Device converter detected
[   28.529437] usb 3-1: Detected FT2232C
[   28.529949] usb 3-1: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now attached to ttyUSB1

ttyUSB0 is the programmer path, as far as I know, and ttyUSB1 is the serial data connection.
The microcontroller board contains an ATMega644A which is not directly compatible with AVRDude, but I have added the appropriate definition to avrdude.conf. I've also added the appropriate definitions to the eclipse definitions so that it sees the proper port definitions and such for the 644A. The project compiles without error and AVRDude attempts to upload it, but I get the subject error.
I've confirmed that I a member of the dialout group and I've added the appropriate udev rule as well. The error persists.
Can any one help me troubleshoot this?

Thanks,
Rod
